Mostly, the joints between legs and supports loosen that might cause a chair to topple or fall dawn. Instead of substituting the broken legs, you can easily repair loose joints and cracked legs. A repair is usually economical as compared to purchasing a new kitchen chair or substituting the whole set of kitchen chairs.
Things Needed to Repair Kitchen Chairs
To repair kitchen chairs you will require:
- Hand saw
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Liquid nails
- Hammer
- Wood putty
- 1-inch wood screws
- Half-inch drill bit
- Half-inch dowel rod
- Stain
In order to repair broken legs, first and foremost get rid of supports that are attached to the broken leg. Either nails or screw them in place.
Once you are through this, take the broken leg with you and go to a specialty woodworking store. From the store, buy a replacement for the broken leg. To match the other chair legs, you might have to stain and finish the replacement. You will face no problem in fitting and judging the fit of the new leg. Just apply liquid nails to each joint of the wood if you are interested in bonding the new leg to the chair. Attach 1-inch wood screws after gluing the pieces. This will help to hold the new leg with the chair firmly. After that, you have to fill the screw holes with wood putty. For matching the putty to the color of the chairs, add a dab of stain.
To repair cracked legs of kitchen chairs, you need to buy at least six inches of wooden dowel rod. The diameter of this wooden dowel should be in the range of half inches. If you want to make a hole from the top of the chair straight down into the leg of the kitchen chair, you need to drill half-inch.
Just press the dowel rod as far as it can go in order to test its fit and mark it with a pen. It is worth mentioning that this is the place where have to cut the rod. When you do this, it does not protrude from the chair. After that, cut the dowel rod at the mark with the help of a handsaw. Once the glue starts drying, slide the dowel rod down into the leg. It will act as a brace for the broken leg of your kitchen chair. Add stain and cover the hole with wood putty to match the chair color.
In order to repair the loose joints of kitchen chairs, first break the joint completely. In addition, also place a small amount of liquid nails in the joint hole side. By inserting a 1-inch long wood screw, you can fortify the structure of the joint. Use wood putty to conceal the head of the screw and remove and traces of repairs.
Repairing your kitchen chairs is not a very complicated or difficult task. It just needs a knack for measuring and applying the right things at the right place. If you feel that you will not be able to do it accurately, consult a professional as you might further damage the chair rather than repairing it if it’s not done properly. |
