Remove the seat from chair by taking out screws from the hardware underneath the seat. Take assistance of old wood as a template if the wood of the seat is not in good condition. Erase any tacks, staples and nails with a screwdriver.  If the foam cushion is decaying, replace it too.

After you have selected the fabric and removed the seat from chair, its time to get to reupholstering.

  • Use the seat bottom as a template by laying on the wrong side of the fabric and cut around the seat.
  • Leave almost 4 inches of fabric all the way around for wrapping and pasting under the seat.
  • Layer the wooden seat, foam and then the fabric upside down. By turning this layered pile you will get the seat or board up.
  • Apply pressure and stretch the fabric around to the back of the board and then staple it.
  • First staple from the four corners, then apply more pressure and staple the remaining fabric to the board or seat.
  • If the corners are rounded, do not cut the fabric. Fold it like a dart, double and then staple it.
  • Once the fabric is secure all over the seat and stretched to the required tension, trim the excessive fabric.
